Transition
While preparing for secondary school is an exciting milestone, we know that moving from primary to secondary education can also be an unsettling and anxious time for some children and their families.
At Longcroft, we pride ourselves on supporting pupils and families every step of the way. Our transition programme is designed to help every child feel confident, prepared and welcomed into our community.
Support during transition includes:
- Visits to primary schools
- Opportunities for us to get to know your child as an individual
- Regular communication with families
- Opportunities for parents and carers to share important information with us
- Transition activities and events designed to help children feel ready for September
As soon as your place at the school is confirmed, we will contact both you and your child's primary school to begin the transition process. You will have opportunities to meet members of our pastoral team and your child's tutor well before Transition Day and the wider programme of activities that take place during July of Year 6.
Our dedicated transition team is available throughout the process, and you are welcome to contact us at any stage, even before your school place has been confirmed, if you have any questions or would like advice or support.
In addition, there are a range of activities for pupils to take part in before they join us. From writing introductory letters to entering competitions and taking part in transition events, pupils quickly begin to feel part of the Longcroft community. Before long, our community becomes your community.
Additional Support
We recognise that some children will need additional support during the move to secondary school. This may include pupils with additional needs, those who feel particularly anxious about the transition, or children joining us from smaller primary schools or without friends from their current setting.
Where appropriate, we offer enhanced transition arrangements, including additional visits, tailored activities and personalised support. We also work closely with pupils and families to identify trusted adults, often from our Learning Hub, who can provide reassurance, continuity and a familiar point of contact throughout the transition process.
Transition Doesn't End in September
Our transition programme does not end when pupils walk through the school gates in September.
On their first day, only Year 7 pupils attend school, giving them the opportunity to become familiar with their new surroundings, routines and expectations before the rest of the school returns.
During their first week, pupils spend additional time with their tutors while lessons are gradually introduced. This careful approach helps children settle into new routines and build confidence. Year 7 pupils also benefit from extended and earlier lunch breaks during the first few weeks, ensuring they can navigate the school day with plenty of support from staff.
Throughout Year 7, the transition to secondary school continues. All pupils have structured opportunities to experience clubs, activities and educational visits as part of our enrichment entitlement. Our curriculum also provides opportunities to explore change, resilience and personal development, helping children to navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with this important stage of life.
Families continue to receive support throughout the year. Our dedicated Care and Achievement Coordinator is available directly by phone or message, alongside a wider pastoral team committed to listening, responding and helping whenever questions or concerns arise.
