Uniform & Equipment

Uniform is an important part of school life and reflects the equality and value we place on each and every individual. It is intended to remove any unnecessary social pressures associated with appearance, prepare pupils for the discipline of professional environments, and give us a shared sense of pride in our school.

Our commitment to ensuring the highest of expectations and standards in all aspects of school life, including uniform, reflects our ambition for the young people we serve. We will challenge our young people to represent themselves and our community in the very best possible way at all times.

Careful consideration has been given to our school uniform requirements. The few items which require school branding are available at www.schoolcoloursdirect.co.uk (please set up an account when accessing the websites and then select Longcroft School) or, for Year 10 and 11 only, www.rawcliffes.co.uk . All other items are readily available from high street retailers. Should you require support accessing any part of our uniform or would like to check the appropriateness of an item, please contact your Care and Achievement Coordinator in the first instance.

Uniform / Appearance Rules (All year groups)

Make-Up/Jewellery: Discreet make-up is permitted. Excessive make-up / fake tanning products will not be tolerated. No jewellery should be worn. If ears have been pierced, plain studs (3mm diameter — only one per ear in each earlobe only) may be worn and removed for PE (only one pair of studs may be worn at any time).  No other body piercing is allowed. False nails and/or painted nails must not be worn.

Hair: We do not allow extreme hairstyles in school. As a general guide examples of extreme hair styles might include hair that is dyed an artificial colour; any ‘two-tone’ colouring/bleaching; excessive use of a hair product to encourage hair to stand up or hair that is cut very short / shaved at the sides but longer on the top/in the middle, and hair that is combed into any sort of Mohican style; hair that has any sort of pattern or ‘parting’ shaved into it. Headscarves are not to be worn except for religious reasons, and any hairbands should be thin and black. Pupils considering a radical change of hairstyle should check with their Care & Achievement Coordinator in advance to ensure that it is within School guidelines.

Outer Clothing: We recommend a simple and inexpensive waterproof coat that completely covers the school blazer. Although hats and scarves are not part of the school uniform, they may be worn in very cold weather, but they must be removed inside school buildings. Denim jackets, hoodies and heavily branded jackets and coats must not be worn.

Footwear: Pupils must wear black school shoes (see relevant guidance above) at all times during the school day, except for when they are having PE lessons or taking part in extra-curricular sports activities. Shoes should be polished regularly to maintain their integrity and appearance. During very cold or wet weather, pupils may wear waterproof boots to school, but these must be changed for school shoes as soon as they arrive on site.

Equipment

All pupils need to bring the following equipment with them to school every day:

Basic Equipment: It is very important that the following items are brought for every day:

  • Writing pens: black or blue, red and purple, and spares.
  • Pencil, and spares.
  • Ruler
  • Rubber
  • Scientific Calculator
  • Protractor
  • Pair of compasses
  • Set Square
  • Highlighter Pens
  • Glue stick
  • Felt tips/coloured pencils
  • Exercise books for that day’s lessons
  • Text books for that day’s lessons
  • Pupil Planner
  • Dictionaries — both English and Foreign Language
  • Hair bobble (to tie back long hair for practical lessons e.g.: Science/Technology/PE)

The Library Stationery Shop

Pupils can buy items from the Library Stationery Shop which is open from 7.45am to 4.15pm. The shop stocks revision guides, calculators, art sketch books and all stationery items needed by pupils throughout the school day.

Mobile Phones

We would strongly advise pupils not to bring mobile phones to school. Mobile phones are expensive and if a phone is damaged or goes missing, it is parents’ and pupils’ responsibility to pay for a replacement. During the school day, we encourage our pupils to converse and play with each other at break and lunchtimes.  The Care and Achievement Coordinators or School Reception are the main point of contact for parents and carers should they need to get a message to pupils.

If pupils choose to bring mobile phones to school, they must remain switched off and in a school bag while on school premises — this includes before school, at break time and lunchtime. Mobile phones found switched on, or out of a school bag (for example in a trouser or blazer pocket) will be taken to reception for sate keeping and require collection at the end of the school day. If for any reason a pupil arrives to school without a bag then their phone should be handed in at the start of the day to reception. Under no circumstances should mobile phones be used to take photos or videos whilst on the school premises, or to share them with others, or upload them to any platform such as social media (Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram etc).
